An attempt to smuggle drugs through a transport company service in Tawau’s east coast district in Sabah was thwarted by Customs officers who seized 10.79kg of syabu concealed inside a box labelled as “fishing equipment.”
Datuk Mohd Nasir Deraman, assistant director of the Sabah Customs Department, revealed in a press conference on Monday (March 18) that the syabu was found packed in 10 plastic packages labelled “168 Freeso-Dried Durian” within the box.
The street value of the syabu was estimated to be around RM356,070.
Following a tip-off about drugs being smuggled through a transport company at Jalan Bakau in Tawau, Customs officers conducted a raid on the premises around noon on March 9, as per Mohd Nasir.
Mohd Nasir explained that the syndicate’s modus operandi involved transporting drugs using the courier service via road from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau, with the recipient’s address listed as “self collection” to evade detection.
The manager of the transport company was detained to aid in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
