Residents in Muar are expressing major concerns over the deteriorating condition of a partially collapsed drain at Jalan Jeram Masjid. They claim that despite the worsening state of the drain, authorities have taken no action to address the issue. Goh Fiak Keng, an 88-year-old shop owner, emphasizes the urgent need for repairs, stating that it is only a matter of time before the drain completely collapses. Goh, who lives next to the drain, experiences a foul stench whenever it rains and fears that if the drain collapses, it will cause damage to his property.

The problems with the drain began about 15 years ago and have progressively worsened over time, according to Goh. He pleads for immediate action and expresses his concerns during a press conference organized by S. Jeganathan, an Independent candidate running in the Simpang Jeram by-election. Goh highlights that cracks near the drain have become hiding spots for snakes, posing a potential danger to the community. As a temporary solution, Goh has placed concrete blocks against the side of the drain to prevent further collapse, particularly during the rainy season.

Another resident, known as Ling, reveals that various government agencies, including the Muar Municipal Council and the Muar Public Works Department, have previously visited the site but failed to take any action. Ling hopes that by raising awareness during the election period, the elected assemblyman will address the issue. S. Jeganathan, as part of his campaign, is actively engaging with voters to understand the problems they face. He pledges to tackle this drainage issue and others raised by constituents if he wins the election. Even if he is not successful, Jeganathan promises to continue advocating for the matter through his non-governmental organization (NGO), although he recognizes the potential challenges in getting things done without holding public office.

The by-election on September 9 will feature a three-cornered fight between S. Jeganathan, Nazri Abdul Rahman from Pakatan Harapan, and Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya from Perikatan Nasional.
