An auxiliary policewoman has been apprehended by authorities on suspicion of making an offensive statement about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a social media platform. The Johor police chief, Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, revealed that a complaint was filed at 10:22 pm on Thursday (Sept 28) by a senior police officer. In a statement released on Friday (Sept 29), Comm Kamarul Zaman disclosed that the officer stumbled upon a Facebook post containing a comment made with the intention to publicly ridicule an individual. This comment received various additional remarks.
Comm Kamarul Zaman further disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspected individual was an auxiliary police personnel stationed in Mersing. Following this discovery, an inquiry into the account holder was conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). “Upon identification of the suspect, we arrested a 39-year-old woman in Endau, Mersing at 10:58 pm on the same day the complaint was made,” Comm Kamarul Zaman added.
Comm Kamarul Zaman elaborated that the case is currently being probed under three separate sections, namely Section 504 of the Penal Code, which addresses intentional insult, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with misuse of network facilities, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which pertains to the act of making offensive statements likely to disturb public order.
In light of this incident, Comm Kamarul Zaman reminded the public to exercise caution while using social media platforms and to refrain from making derogatory remarks or posts that may insult others or instill public anxiety.
