Datuk Seri Azmin Ali alleges that his former boss, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, still sees him as his former private secretary despite Azmin claiming to be more successful than the Prime Minister himself.
In a podcast called Keluar Sekejap, hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan, Azmin stated, “Anwar could not see me being more successful than him. He still saw me as his private secretary.”
Azmin said that despite being the first state assemblyman from PKR, he was not considered for the Selangor mentri besar post, which was given to the late Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim. He further described the Kajang Move, which aimed to remove Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as the Selangor mentri besar, as the “biggest betrayal” in Selangor’s political history.
Currently a member of Perikatan Nasional, Azmin revealed that he offered to run for the PKR president post in 2018 if Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ibrahim did not wish to defend her position. However, Anwar did not take any steps to ensure Azmin’s uncontested position as the party’s number two.
Azmin claimed that his name was not included in PKR’s proposed list of cabinet members in a letter from Dr Wan Azizah to then-prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He added that it was Dr Mahathir who personally chose him to be a minister.
When Khairy asked if this was the moment Azmin decided to betray Anwar, Azmin replied, “He knifed me and he sacked me.”
Azmin clarified that he had never defected from the party and emphasized that the majority of the party supported him. He stated, “Why should I leave the party when two-thirds of the party are my camp who won in the party polls.”
Regarding loyalty, Azmin admitted that he had limits to his loyalty towards Anwar. He mentioned that he did not ask Anwar to acknowledge his commitment to him and his family when Anwar was in jail. Azmin expressed disappointment with Anwar, saying, “He did not have respect or gratitude for me and his friends. He did not build PKR.”
Azmin concluded by noting, “When he got out of prison… I hoped Anwar would be a better person and not a bitter person but the reverse happened.”
Azmin, one of the founding members of PKR, was expelled from the party in 2020 following the Sheraton Move.
