PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (pic) will make a comeback to Hulu Kelang for the Selangor election. Azmin, who currently serves as the Selangor Perikatan chairman, will be returning to his hometown after more than 24 years since he first won the state seat under PKR in 1999.
The former mentri besar of Selangor is one of the 56 candidates announced by Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who will be competing in the state election on August 12.
Prior to this, Azmin held the Bukit Antarabangsa seat, which he secured under PKR in the 14th General Election. However, following the Sheraton move in 2020, he defected to Bersatu.
Azmin recently expressed confidence in Perikatan’s ability to secure 33 to 35 state seats in the Selangor polls, claiming that the coalition has been making positive progress in garnering support from both Malays and non-Malay voters in the state.
In addition to Azmin, the coalition is also fielding Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Rashid Asari, who is the current incumbent for Selat Kelang.
Muhyiddin also announced that Srikandi Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Rina Harun will be contesting for the Batu Tiga seat, while Perikatan has chosen Nurul Syazwani, the daughter of former Umno warlord Tan Sri Noh Omar, to compete in Permatang.
