SINGER Baby Shima (pic), 30, has announced that she will stand as an independent candidate in the state elections on Aug 12, Harian Metro reported.

Shima or Nor Ashima Ramli has yet to decide which state assembly seat she will be contesting, but said that her goal was to help the people.

“Assalamualaikum Malaysians. I would like to announce that I will be contesting in the state election because I want to serve and fight for the people. Remember, you can bring change. Think about the young people. Vote for me,” she said.

“I want to do the best for the people. Winning or losing is secondary. There is no harm in trying to do something good. Please pray for me,” she said on Instagram.

Shima’s video garnered some 6,000 likes from her followers, with many expressing their support towards her intention.

This would not be the first time an artiste has expressed interest in politics. Previously Aishah, Dira Abu Zahar, Herman Tino, Azwan Ali, Ahmad Idham, Datuk Eizlan Yusof dan Lando Zawawi have all contested in elections.

    > More than 1,300 families in Taman Semarak, Sungai Pasir in Sungai Petani, Kedah are angry and disappointed after being constantly targeted by optical cable thieves. The thefts have affected the residents who are dependent on the Internet for their day-to-day usage, businesses and even school children.

Suhaimi Che Din, 40, said the cable thefts have happened several times with Telekom Malaysia (TM) having to repair the damaged lines to ensure users are not affected for a long period of time.

“Residents are angry because the Internet gets interrupted every time there is a theft,” he told Kosmo.

For Muhammad Syazwan Jamaluddin, 34, good Internet coverage is necessary to facilitate their work and daily affairs.

“School-going children also use the Internet for their learning and these thefts have interrupted their work too,” he said.

Another resident, Mohd Radzi Shamsuddin, 66, said the cable thefts are usually carried out by several individuals early in the morning when residents are sleeping or during a rainy night.

“Thieves go the extent of breaking the concrete cement covering the cable manhole and use their own vehicle to lift the manhole cover. They even put safety cones and use vests while carrying out these activities to avoid raising any suspicion among the residents,” he said.

He added that the residents are planning to carry out night patrols to prevent the thefts from happening again.
