A babysitter named Siti Aina Nurnisa Mohammad Sai’d, aged 25, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (Oct 2). She is facing charges of neglecting a three-year-old girl who was under her care, resulting in the child drowning. The incident took place in an apartment unit in Lojing Height, Wangsa Maju, two weeks ago.

Siti Aina Nurnisa Mohammad Sai’d, who had the responsibility of caring for the young girl, is being accused of neglecting her in a manner that led to her drowning between 11am and 11.20am last September 20. If convicted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, she could face a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of 20 years, or both.

Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril granted Siti Aina Nurnisa Mohammad Sai’d bail in the amount of RM5,000 with one surety. The court has set November 15 as the date for the next mention of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor, Lim Chooi Yi, presented the case while the accused was represented by lawyer Muhammad Irsyad Mohamad Hassan. It is worth noting that Siti Aina Nurnisa Mohammad Sai’d has three children, including a one-year-old who is still breastfeeding, and also takes care of her bedridden father.
