Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that any queries regarding the performance of the ringgit will be addressed by Bank Negara governor Datuk Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour.
Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, mentioned that Abdul Rasheed had given his word to clarify the issue.
“Regarding the ringgit, the governor (Abdul Rasheed) is present. He has assured us that he will provide an answer,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Anwar is reported to have made these remarks briefly to journalists after presiding over the 15th International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance (ICIEF) on Tuesday (Feb 20).
As emerging Asian currencies weakened against the dollar on Tuesday, Malaysia’s ringgit hit a 26-year low. The Chinese yuan also declined after China cut its benchmark mortgage rate by a greater margin than anticipated, although it received a boost from state bank purchasing.
The ringgit weakened by as much as 0.2%, reaching its lowest level since January 1998. Additionally, the South Korean won and the Taiwanese dollar dropped by 0.2% and 0.3% respectively.
