The residents of the state are advised to promptly seek medical attention at the nearest clinic or hospital if they experience symptoms resembling monkeypox. The symptoms include fever, fatigue, headaches, and a maculopapular rash that initially appears on the face and then spreads to the hands and feet before affecting other parts of the body. A. Sivanesan, the Chairman of the State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee, emphasized the contagious nature of monkeypox disease and the need for quarantining infected individuals. He urged the public to exercise caution and undergo health screening if they exhibit the aforementioned symptoms. This announcement was made by Sivanesan during a press conference held at Aeon Mall Station 18 in Ipoh on August 26.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the occurrence of two cases of monkeypox infection in the country on August 25. One of the cases involved a foreign male, while the other case concerned a local male who had been in contact with the first infected individual. This local male tested positive for monkeypox on July 29. No instances of monkeypox disease have been reported in the state thus far. As part of proactive preventive measures to contain the spread of the disease, the Perak State Health Department has been monitoring high-risk areas such as international entry points, according to Sivanesan.
He further elaborated, “We are closely monitoring individuals deemed at risk, which includes travelers and tourists. Extensive training has also been provided to all Health Department staff to ensure their competency in managing monkeypox cases.” The public health campaign, held in collaboration between Quest International University and the Perak Health Department, aims to raise awareness among the public, particularly concerning skincare and treatment. The campaign offers various services free of charge, allowing the public to engage in activities such as health forums and healthy cooking workshops.
Sivanesan commended these efforts, stating, “This endeavor should be applauded as it not only provides complimentary services but also offers an array of health services that are highly beneficial to the public.” – Bernama
