KUALA LUMPUR: As the Hari Raya celebration approaches, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is urging the public and public transport drivers to prioritize safety on the roads.

Senior Enforcement Director Datuk Lokman Jamaan emphasized that JPJ is committed to reducing fatalities from road accidents.

“Our goal is to lower the statistics of accidents and fatalities caused by road accidents. We call on all road users to work together to achieve the aspirations of Malaysia Madani by practicing patience and tolerance towards each other.

“This is crucial for the safety of ourselves and our families. Please report any complaints to us through the MyJPJ e-aduan@jpj mobile application or email us at [email protected],” he stated.

Lokman made these remarks during a press conference at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan on Monday (April 8) before conducting inspections on several buses departing from Kuala Lumpur to other states in preparation for the Hari Raya celebration.

According to Lokman, JPJ has inspected 3,799 buses at 54 depots and 28 terminals nationwide from April 1 to 7.

Out of these, 47 buses were issued summonses for various reasons including drivers lacking a Competent Driving License (CDL) and misconduct. Additionally, 42 buses received a Vehicle Use Prohibition Notice (PG1) for technical regulation violations.

“Six bus drivers who failed the urine test screening, out of 244 drivers, were also issued driving bans. Among them, two drivers are from Sarawak and Kedah each, and one each from Kelantan and Perak. Surprisingly, one of them is over 60 years old,” he added.

“Therefore, JPJ will contact the bus company for further investigation, and a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for action under Act 715. In addition, JPJ will suspend the driver’s license under Section 36 of Act 333 after verification from the National Anti-Drugs Agency.”

Lokman also mentioned that JPJ has deployed undercover officers to monitor whether bus drivers are complying with regulations, and this operation will continue until April 20.

“Our undercover officers have checked 84 buses so far, with 62 cases related to driver misconduct and dangerous driving. I urge the public to be vigilant and report any incidents of dangerous driving so we can take action and prevent such behavior,” he said.

Lokman emphasized that JPJ will not tolerate any violations by bus companies, owners, or drivers, emphasizing the department’s commitment to creating a safe environment for all road users.
