PETALING JAYA: Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun and Berjaya Land Berhad are demanding a public apology and RM200mil in compensation from Kedah caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor regarding recent remarks made about the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.

Berjaya Land alleges that Muhammad Sanusi made unfounded allegations during a Perikatan Nasional event on Aug 2, claiming that Tan was the “taukeh” or boss of caretaker Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Additionally, the company accuses Muhammad Sanusi of baselessly claiming that 600ha of land was awarded to Tan for free, and suggesting that Tan would cause RM180mil in losses for the Selangor government through a project surrounding Sungai Klang.

Berjaya Land issued a press release on Aug 4 denying these allegations and providing a point-by-point rebuttal to correct the false statements made by Muhammad Sanusi. Lawyers representing Tan and Berjaya Land served a letter of demand to Muhammad Sanusi on Aug 5, outlining five demands for the Perikatan election director.

The demands include the removal and retraction of all defamatory statements, a public apology by Muhammad Sanusi on a platform chosen by the lawyers, a written undertaking from Muhammad Sanusi that he will not repeat or publish such statements, a written undertaking to cease sharing any such statements, and an agreement to pay RM200mil in compensation to Tan and Berjaya Land.

If the demands are not met by the end of tomorrow, the company plans to take legal action. Berjaya Land has also filed police reports against Muhammad Sanusi and several bloggers, including Murray Hunter, Badrul Hisham Shaharin (known as Chegubard), and Raja Petra Kamarudin, for publishing similar defamatory remarks about the SMG project.

In a statement, Tan stated that the remarks have damaged their integrity, credit, reputation, and image, as well as casting doubt on their business endeavors and philanthropic activities. Tan emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for making false and damaging statements.
