PUTRAJAYA: Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister, has urged the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), and Information Department (Japen) to enhance their collaboration in developing strategies to combat fake news. Speaking after attending the Communications and Digital Ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya on Thursday, Fahmi emphasized the importance of these three agencies, which fall under his ministry, in countering inaccurate information on social media and mainstream media promptly. He stressed the significance of taking this matter seriously to prevent misunderstandings and prolonged confusion among the public caused by the proliferation of fake news and information. Fahmi stated that RTM, Bernama, and Japen should work closely together to swiftly counter false information and baseless allegations, as they have the potential to damage reputations and create negative perceptions. He emphasized that this is not a political issue, but a matter of national importance.

Furthermore, Fahmi stated that it is crucial for the agencies to be proactive in improving public service delivery and urged them to cultivate the habit of verifying the authenticity of information or news before sharing it. In line with this objective, Fahmi mentioned that during the debate on the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review in Parliament, he may discuss the proposal by government backbencher Rodziah Ismail for RTM to introduce a daily review of false news. He suggested the creation of a segment on RTM news called “Fitnah Apa Hari Ini” (Today’s False News) to address and rebut all fake news in order to avoid misunderstandings among the public.

In addition, Fahmi announced that the ministry will implement improvements in the organization of the National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations in 2024 with the aim of making these historic events even more vibrant. He expressed gratitude for the successful HKHM2023 celebrations, which involved collaboration from all parties, and acknowledged that it would not have been possible without their cooperation. He also mentioned that he was touched by the cooperation received, as it was his first time leading the ministry, and stated that they will explore ways to enhance the National Month celebration calendar for the coming year.

Furthermore, Fahmi highlighted the successful attendance at the National Day 2023 celebration at Dataran Putrajaya, with over 100,000 people in attendance, and the Malaysia Day celebration at the Unity Stadium in Kuching, Sarawak, with over 5,000 attendees. The HKHM 2023 celebrations were conducted under the theme “Malaysia Madani: Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan” (Civilized Malaysia: Determined Unity Fulfills Hope). – Bernama
