Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) has made a price adjustment for imported white rice, lowering it from RM3,200 to RM3,000 per metric ton. This change will be effective starting Wednesday, March 20.
The reduced prices mean a decrease in the retail price of imported white rice, with a drop of RM2 to RM3 per 10kg bag, as stated by Bernas. Despite the high price of imported white rice over the past 15 years, Bernas is committed to ensuring product availability.
As part of its efforts to support the nation’s food security agenda, Bernas collaborates closely with the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and industry partners. The company also reaffirms its commitment to the ministry’s long-term action plan, which focuses on the welfare of farmers and maintaining a sustainable rice supply chain within Malaysia.
The government announced a reduction in the retail price of imported white rice by RM2 to RM3 on Tuesday, March 19. Currently, imported white rice is sold for between RM38 to RM45 per 10kg bag. With this adjustment, the price could potentially go down to RM35.
The decision to lower the price of imported white rice was finalized by the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol) in response to the shortage of local white rice in the market following Bernas’ announcement of imported white rice prices on September 1, 2023, according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
Minister Mohamad Sabu expressed confidence that this initiative will help ease the cost of living for the people, particularly during the upcoming Ramadan month and festive seasons. This move aims to benefit consumers and support the accessibility of essential food items in the market.
