PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has come under fire and sparked outrage among netizens for his recent remark regarding Malay roti canai and mamak shops. His comment has been labeled as a racial statement.
On Thursday morning (Aug 3), the Machang MP took to Facebook to express his preference for Malay roti canai over the variety served at mamak shops. His post was written in the Kelantanese dialect and accompanied by a photo of himself enjoying roti canai at a Malay eatery, which he also recommended to his followers.
While Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s previous Facebook posts typically received only a few hundred reactions and comments, this particular post garnered 11,000 reactions and nearly 3,000 comments, with the majority being critical of his statement.
Netizens expressed the view that without mamak shops and Indian contribution, Malays would be unaware of roti canai. They emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding among the various races in society.
One Facebook user, Baba Ezrairis, commented, “In this life, we need each other. The more you mix around, the smarter you will be.” Another user, Takuya Kimira, questioned why the MP felt the need to make comparisons between races.
Moreover, some individuals criticized Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s inconsistency in his preference for Malay roti canai, questioning his choice to seek mamak roti canai when he is in Kuala Lumpur.
Despite the criticism, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal remained unfazed and even replied to a netizen who asked about his reaction if they were to encounter him at a mamak eatery. The MP clarified that he did not dislike mamak food and that his comment was merely a matter of personal preference.
The controversy surrounding Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s remarks highlights the sensitivity of racial issues in Malaysia and the importance of promoting unity and inclusiveness among the diverse communities.
