PETALING JAYA: According to Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal, Beruas DAP MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham’s suggestion of including a non-Muslim in the special committee investigating the competency of the Selangor state assembly to formulate Islamic laws is excessive. The Bersatu Youth chief criticized Ngeh’s statement as shallow and ignorant of the Constitution.
Wan Ahmad Fayshal emphasized that as a member of Parliament, Ngeh should be aware that matters concerning Islam are under the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers. He pointed out that Islamic laws should be discussed, managed, and enforced by Muslims, with no involvement from non-Muslims.
The Bersatu Youth chief also expressed concern that Ngeh’s proposal could cause public unease, particularly among Muslims, if non-Muslims were to participate in the process of formulating Islamic laws. He suggested that Ngeh could recommend Islamic experts instead, and stressed that the committee has the approval of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is the national council chairman of Malaysian Islamic Affairs.
Wan Ahmad Fayshal called for Ngeh to retract his proposal and issue a public apology, since work on the committee has already begun and the Sultan of Selangor has given his approval.
