A group of undocumented migrants attempted to enter the country unnoticed during the early hours of dawn, only to be intercepted by marine police at Gelam-Gelam waters in Sabah’s east coast Semporna district on Friday, September 15. Believed to have traveled from the Philippines in two speedboats, the group was on their way to the mainland when they were stopped by patrolling law enforcement personnel as part of Operation Taring Gelora Khas at 6:30 am.
According to a source, an inspection revealed that the migrants, ranging in age from six to 60, did not possess any valid travel documents. Subsequently, the individuals were apprehended and their boats were seized. Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin, commander of Marine Police Region 4, confirmed the incident on Saturday, September 16.
“The detainees and the boats have been taken to the Semporna marine police base for further action,” he stated. The case is currently under investigation in accordance with the Immigration Act 1959/1963, he added.
