KOTA KINABALU: A group of undocumented migrants attempted to enter the country unnoticed during the early hours of the morning. However, their efforts were in vain as they were apprehended by the marine police in the Gelam-Gelam waters of Sabah’s east coast in the Semporna district on Friday. It is believed that the group had traveled from the Philippines in two speedboats and were en route to the mainland when they were intercepted by the police during their patrol for Ops Taring Gelora Khas at 6.30am.
According to a source, an inspection of the group members, who ranged in age from six to 60, revealed that they did not possess valid travel documents. As a result, they were detained and their boats were confiscated by the authorities. Asst Comm Ahmad Ariffin, the Marine Police Region 4 commander, confirmed the incident and stated that the detainees and the seized boats were taken to the Semporna marine police base for further action.
He also mentioned that the case is under investigation for violations of the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
