KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is eagerly awaiting the results of an investigation into a shocking incident at a school in Kelantan, where students were allegedly bitten by a male teacher. Emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy towards violence, including bullying and abuse, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that the ministry would not compromise on ensuring the safety and well-being of students. “We are currently waiting for the investigative findings, which have been submitted to the state education department,” Fadhlina informed reporters at the Digital Utilisation and Technology Awards 2022 ceremony on Tuesday (July 11).
The Education Minister was responding to a statement made by a woman who claimed that her son was afraid to attend school due to frequent instances of being bitten by a male teacher. According to the woman’s social media post, her son was not the only victim, as several other students had also experienced similar incidents. The alarming nature of these attacks left the students traumatized and emotionally distressed.
Fadhlina Sidek assured the public that the ministry would provide updates on the case as necessary. She stressed that all complaints regarding violence would be thoroughly investigated, but also highlighted the importance of following the proper channels and procedures in reporting such incidents, including the need to verify the claims.
In addition to the ongoing investigation, Fadhlina shared some positive news. She announced that the Digital Education Policy, aimed at bridging the digital gap in Malaysian schools, had been raised and approved by the Cabinet. The implementation of this policy is expected to produce a generation of digitally-savvy individuals, as highlighted by former education minister Radzi Jidin in 2021.
Overall, it is evident that the Education Ministry is taking the matter of teacher-student violence very seriously. Through a comprehensive investigation process and the initiation of the Digital Education Policy, the ministry aims to address the issue and ensure a safe learning environment for all students in Malaysia.
