PUTRAJAYA: The blood spatter on the wall of the burnt room where Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan’s body was found was confirmed to be a match for his DNA, according to the Court of Appeal. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari pointed out that forensic officer ASP Nizam Hussain confirmed the blood splatter was due to blunt force trauma and occurred before the fire. The prosecution argued that ASP Nizam’s extensive experience and observations make him an expert in blood spatter analysis.

Fifteen cotton swabs with samples from the blood spatter were taken from the crime scene and sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis. Chemist S. Jayasilan, who testified as the 43rd prosecution witness, confirmed that three cotton swabs matched the DNA profile of the deceased, supporting the prosecution’s theory that the body was moved.

The respondent’s lawyer argued that the blood spatter was only discovered five months after the incident and that a more experienced forensic officer, DSP C. Tharmalingan, did not find it during his visit to the scene. However, Mohd Amril countered that DSP Tharmalingan was never questioned about the blood spatter and his role focused on collecting floor boards for DNA profiling.

A three-judge panel led by Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, along with Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim and Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli, has set Oct 23 for further hearings on the case. Samirah Muzaffar, Nazrin’s widow, and her two teenage sons were acquitted of murdering Nazrin by the Shah Alam High Court on June 21, 2022, after the court found that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against them.
