Barisan Nasional will need to work hard to persuade voters and their grassroots that their alliance with Pakatan Harapan is in the best interest of all Malaysians, according to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Barisan chairman, who is also the president of Umno, acknowledged that the nine-month-old cooperation between the two coalitions has raised concerns among voters. He stated that Barisan has previously cooperated with Gerakan, the opposition party in control of Penang at the time, and faced similar resistance from Umno members and the Malay community. However, explanations were given and Barisan was eventually accepted. Ahmad Zahid expressed that racial harmony and understanding among different races, cultures, and religions are crucial for a united and progressive Malaysia.
Speaking at a press conference after launching Belia Desa Madani at B5 Street Market in Johor Baru on Friday (Aug 25), Ahmad Zahid emphasized that it is important for Barisan and Pakatan to demonstrate togetherness and understanding to prevent racial prejudice. He highlighted the importance of preserving the national identity of the country while establishing a diverse and inclusive Malaysia. Additionally, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, urged Umno members to respect the democratic process of the party and not be swayed by calls for a change in the top leadership. He advocated for unity and solidarity within the party, urging members to strengthen Umno during challenging times.
Ahmad Zahid discouraged playing the blame game, pointing out that there was no demand for the president’s resignation when they achieved significant victories in Melaka and Johor. He acknowledged the inevitable ups and downs in politics and called for a shift in mindset to foster unity within the party. The Barisan chairman acknowledged that both Barisan and Pakatan face constant attacks and various accusations, but emphasized the need for cooperation and understanding across races to counteract such negativity and build a civilized Malaysia that celebrates its diversity without forsaking its national identity.
