KUALA PILAH: The Barisan Nasional candidate for the Seri Menanti seat in Negri Sembilan is not taking his opponent lightly, despite winning by a slim 595-vote majority in the previous state polls. Muhammad Sufian Maradzi, who is contesting in the upcoming state polls on August 12, acknowledges the strength and reputation of his opponent, Bersatu’s Jamali Salam.
As the Kuala Pilah Umno deputy chief, Muhammad Sufian hopes that both candidates can engage in mature politics and focus on principles instead of resorting to personal attacks.
In the previous state polls, Jamali Salam was defeated by then Barisan candidate Datuk Abd Samad Ibrahim, along with another PAS candidate.
Bersatu, formerly part of Pakatan Harapan, has now formed the Perikatan Nasional coalition with PAS.
If elected, Muhammad Sufian, aged 41, has a variety of goals he hopes to achieve. These include improving the road infrastructure from Seremban to Kuala Pilah, promoting Seri Menanti as a tourist attraction (as it is where the state palace is located), and enhancing internet connectivity in rural areas.
“This is my first time contesting as a candidate, and my interest in politics comes from my family’s active involvement in community work,” Muhammad Sufian explained.
The state elections for Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu will be held on August 12. Nomination day is on Saturday, July 29, and early polling will take place on August 8.
