KOTA KINABALU: The body of seven-year-old Romy Azlan, who drowned after the boat he was on capsized in Sandakan waters on Tuesday (Aug 1), has been found on Wednesday (Aug 2).

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol boat located his remains at 11am at 0.4 nautical mile northeast of Tanjung Batu, about 600m from where the boat capsized.

The body has been handed over to the police for further action.

On Tuesday, the victim was with five family members – four adults and another child – on the vessel that was sailing from Pulau Timbang jetty towards Kampung Mumiang.

The boat is believed to have hit a floating object around 2.30pm, causing the boat to capsize.

Five passengers were rescued but the victim went missing, leading to a search and rescue (SAR) operation being mounted involving various agencies.

Sandakan MMEA director Maritime Capt Zainudin Mohd Zuki reminded boat owners and operators to ensure passengers wear safety jackets at all times when at sea.
