    MERSING: A terrifying incident nearly ended in tragedy when a man was swept away by strong currents while attempting to pass through a flooded road at KM34 Jalan Jemaluang-Kota Tinggi.

    The station chief of the Mersing Fire and Rescue Department, Abdul Muiz Mukhtar, revealed that the harrowing incident took place at 7.19am on Tuesday (Jan 2).

    He identified the victim as a 23-year-old man from Mersing, who was on his way to work in Johor Baru when he encountered the flooded road at KM34 Jalan Jemaluang-Kota Tinggi.

    “Upon reaching the flooded area, the victim decided to ride through the water; however, his motorcycle’s engine abruptly shut down, leaving him stranded,” Abdul Muiz explained.

    He went on to say that the victim was swept away approximately 7 meters in 1.5 meters deep water.

    “The victim was able to grasp onto a submerged pole and await the arrival of the rescue team,” he added.

    Abdul Muiz disclosed that the incident was witnessed by passersby, who promptly alerted the Department for assistance.

    He further stated that it took around 30 minutes to free the man from his precarious position.
