BUTTERWORTH: A tragic incident occurred in Butterworth when an eight-year-old boy, who had fallen into a swamp, died shortly after being rescued. The boy was discovered unconscious and immediately rushed to the Seberang Jaya Hospital at approximately 7pm on Friday (Aug 11). Sadly, the hospital later confirmed his death at around 9.55pm.

The Fire and Rescue Department provided details of the incident, explaining that the boy, who was of Rohingya ethnicity, had been saved by members of the public after he appeared to be drowning in the swamp located at Jalan Baru, Seberang Jaya. He was found unconscious and quickly taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital by the public before the department arrived at the scene, while it was still around 7pm.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for constant supervision, particularly when it involves children and vulnerable individuals. The authorities and communities must work together to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.

If you witness someone in distress in the water, it is crucial to immediately notify the relevant authorities and provide any necessary assistance, while prioritizing your own safety as well. Acting quickly can significantly improve the chances of a successful rescue operation.

Additionally, it is vital to educate yourself and others on swimming and water safety. Teaching children about the dangers of water and how to swim can help prevent accidents and save lives.

In light of this unfortunate incident, the relevant authorities should consider reviewing safety measures and precautions around water bodies, especially those that are easily accessible to the public. Adequate signage, fencing, and constant monitoring can minimize the risk of similar incidents in the future.
