Tragedy Strikes Sabah as Two Boys Drown in Separate Incidents

KOTA KINABALU: In a tragic incident off Sabah’s east coast Semporna district, a seven-year-old boy drowned while another boy of the same age went missing after their boat capsized on Friday (July 14).

According to reports, the boys were accompanied by two male adults, believed to be their fathers, who managed to remain safe amidst the chaos at the Menampilik waters near Pulau Nusa Tengah.

The marine police found the two men, aged 25 and 28, shortly thereafter.

The victim has been identified as Nasirin Katibin, while the missing boy is Padli Ambit.

As of now, details regarding the cause of the incident remain unclear.

The incident is believed to have occurred at around 1pm.

Upon receiving a distress call from the Semporna police headquarters at 2.41pm, the Fire and Rescue Department promptly launched a search operation covering a 3.2 nautical miles radius from the overturned boat location.

However, the operation was called off at 4.50pm and will resume on Saturday (July 15) morning, according to a department spokesperson.

In a separate incident in the neighboring Lahad Datu district, a 14-year-old boy named Muhamad Zulaimie drowned while swimming with friends in a river.

Reports indicate that Muhamad had gone to the river at Mile 5 Kampung Sepagaya when the disturbing incident occurred.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call about the incident at 3.12pm; however, the boy’s remains were discovered by the public before the firemen reached the scene.

Rescuers tried to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on-site, but medical officers from the Health Ministry later confirmed his unfortunate demise.
