In response to calls for a boycott of KK Super Mart over the socks controversy, Datuk Chong Sin Woon expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on the country. The MCA secretary-general warned Umno Youth chief Dr Muhammad Akmal against escalating the issue through boycott tactics, emphasizing that such actions could ultimately harm Malaysia.
Dr. Akmal had demanded a stronger apology from KK Mart, insisting that the company issue banners at all 881 outlets nationwide to apologize for the controversial socks. He also threatened more drastic measures if the apology was not made within two days.
Following the backlash, KK Super Mart founder Datuk Seri Dr KK Chai issued an apology on March 15 for the sale of socks with the word “Allah” printed on them. He clarified that only three out of 800 branches carried the socks, with a total of 14 pairs bearing the inappropriate wording.
The vendor responsible for the socks also made a public apology, explaining that the merchandise was sold on a consignment basis without any intention to disrupt public harmony.
