JOHOR BARU: The Election Commission (EC) should provide a breakdown of voting trends by gender to gain a better understanding of men and women’s turnout, according to Teo Nie Ching.
Teo expressed that the current voter data collected by the EC is segregated by race and age groups. She said, “It would be beneficial to include a gender breakdown as it is equally important to understand women’s voting trends and their involvement in political matters,” said Teo, who is also the Deputy Communications and Digital Minister.
She further added, “Empowering women and addressing women’s issues can be achieved if we can demonstrate that women have a significant influence and high voter turnout in elections.” The Deputy Communications and Digital Minister made these remarks during the Johor Unity Wanita Assembly held at the Cerebral Palsy Association hall on September 2.
Teo also highlighted that women played a crucial role in determining the outcome of the Pulai parliamentary seat by-election, mentioning that the male-female voter ratio was fairly balanced. Pulai has a total of 166,653 registered voters and is being contested by Suhaizan Kayat from Pakatan Harapan, Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional, and Independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi.
Pulai is a mixed constituency, with Malays accounting for 44.18% of the registered voters, followed by the Chinese (40.46%), Indians (12.31%), and other ethnicities (3.06%).
Additionally, the parliamentary by-election in Pulai is being held concurrently with the Simpang Jeram state seat by-election. Both seats were left vacant following the passing of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was also the Pulai MP and Simpang Jeram assemblyman.
The polling date for the by-elections is scheduled for September 9.
