MELAKA: Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari stated that the Defence Ministry’s Budget 2024 allocation of RM19.7bil will significantly enhance Malaysia’s capability to protect its interests in the South China Sea. Adly emphasized the importance of the resource-rich South China Sea as a crucial maritime zone for Malaysia. He highlighted that the country is committed to maintaining stability and peace along maritime borders, as outlined in the Defence White Paper.

Adly further explained that the Budget 2024 allocation, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, includes RM2bil more than the previous year. The allocation will primarily be used for asset acquisition, border security, and welfare improvements for Armed Forces personnel. Additionally, the allocation will be utilized to purchase three littoral mission ships (LMS) in 2024, specifically to reinforce the country’s naval capabilities in the South China Sea.

LMS vessels are designed for stealth combat near coastlines and can sometimes engage larger enemy vessels. Adly revealed that the three new LMS ships will be stationed in Sarawak. Furthermore, the allocation will be used to construct seven border posts in Melikin and Pa’ Daleh, both located in Sarawak. Additionally, security posts will be established in Sungai Desa Aji Kuning and Sebatik Island in Sabah.

Overall, the increased budget allocation for the Defence Ministry will significantly contribute to safeguarding Malaysia’s interests and sovereignty in the South China Sea. The government aims to prioritize the country’s maritime borders in terms of revenue generation and national defense, as highlighted in the Defence White Paper.
