KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM60mil to enhance preparedness against cyber attacks. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, explained that the allocation will be used by CyberSecurity, the national cyber security specialist agency under the Communications and Digital Ministry, to develop a cyber security testing framework and local expertise on 5G Technology.
In his Budget 2024 presentation in the Dewan Rakyat on Friday (Oct 13), Anwar noted that Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has successfully achieved 70.2% network coverage for 5G in populated areas as of September. He reassured that by the end of this year, the 5G network will reach approximately 80% coverage in populated areas.
Anwar highlighted that all telecommunication companies now offer 5G services with excellent quality, and efforts will be intensified to boost the adoption of 5G. This is in collaboration with telecommunication companies to ensure more users and industries can benefit.
Expediting the development of the National Digital Identity (IDN) as a trusted identification platform is another step towards improving public service efficiency. Anwar mentioned the creation of the GovTech Nucleus Unit, dedicated to developing internal expertise and facilitating the development of user-friendly applications like IDN at an optimal cost.
Ultimately, the government aims to be ranked within the top 20 for the Government Efficiency Sub-Index in the Global Competitiveness Report, as the 12th Malaysia Plan reaches its final stages.
