Malaysia’s goal is to have 80% 5G network coverage in populated areas by the end of the year, and CelcomDigi plans to launch initiatives to encourage local businesses to adopt the next-generation network. CelcomDigi’s CEO, Datuk Idham Nawawi, stated at the MY5G Conference and Showcase in Kuala Lumpur that a robust ecosystem is needed to push for 5G adoption. He emphasized that 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning are industrializing the digital economy and making Malaysia more competitive globally.

During the conference, CelcomDigi highlighted its collaboration with DHL Supply Chain to introduce Malaysia’s first 5G-powered autonomous AI warehouse. The DHL logistics center in Shah Alam, which is the largest in the country, utilizes AI and robotics for optimized inventory management. This partnership demonstrates CelcomDigi’s commitment to accelerating 5G adoption in businesses.

One local company, XR Associates (XRA), is utilizing 5G’s low latency to power its augmented reality (AR) and extended reality (XR) software. XRA creates virtual replicas of industrial facilities for site monitoring, remote expert support, and AR training and assistance. The real-time monitoring and response provided by 5G are crucial for this solution, particularly when developing a remote virtual twin to gather real-time data.

Sole Vision Technologies, a video surveillance analytics provider, leverages the power of 5G to optimize AI integration within its smart surveillance system. With 5G, the company offers real-time license plate and vehicle identification, as well as facial recognition. The widespread development of 5G has improved system connectivity and reduced costs related to cable installation and labor expenses.

Medilink-Global, a healthcare claims management solution company, is exploring telehealth services using 5G to remotely listen to a patient’s heartbeat. This solution aims to provide medical attention to patients in rural areas where urgent care may not be readily available. The head of the village can use a cart consisting of a computer, camera, and connected stethoscope to connect patients with doctors.

Garuda Robotics utilizes 5G capabilities to enable remote drone operations through its Plex Horizon platform. The company has been contracted by the Singaporean government to implement its MyDroneFleets drone monitoring system, which relies on 5G for high-resolution video and low latency for immediate response. This ensures safe and controlled drone flights.

CelcomDigi’s CEO, Idham, commended the government’s support for funding digitalization and ensuring that small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) remain vital to the Malaysian economy. Initiatives such as RM100 million digitalization grants under Budget 2024 will benefit over 20,000 SMEs and micro-entrepreneurs. Idham sees this as a golden opportunity for collective growth and achievement of both individual and national digital aspirations.
