PETALING JAYA: The investigation into a speech made by former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has commenced, according to Bukit Aman.

Deputy Comm Datuk Suresh Kumar G. Suppiah, the deputy director of Bukit Aman Cid (forensics/strategic planning), confirmed that the police have received multiple reports against Guan Eng. These reports were made in response to his speech where he claimed that a “green wave” would destroy temples.

“The statement was believed to have been made during the ‘Tian Fu Gong Bai Long Wang Singapore-Malaysia Tour 2023’ event in Jelutong, Penang on July 7,” said Deputy Comm Datuk Suresh Kumar G. Suppiah.

He also mentioned that the Special Investigation Unit (USJT) is currently handling the investigation. The authorities are conducting the investigation under the Sedition Act, Penal Code, and Communications and Multimedia Act, addressing acts with seditious tendencies, statements causing public alarm and distress, and improper use of network facilities.

“Investigations are underway, and we urge the public not to speculate on this matter as it may disrupt the investigation process. Strict actions will be taken against any individuals or groups that try to disrupt national harmony and security,” he added.

A Chinese daily, China Press, recently reported that the former chief minister stated that a ‘Green Wave’ would destroy Buddhist temples. However, Lim Guan Eng disputed this news report and clarified that he was referring to a previous case in 2020 concerning the demolition of a Hindu temple in Kedah.

“It has never crossed my mind to use ruler, race, and religion issues to gather votes, as I am certain that doing so will only disrupt the harmony among the various races and religions in this country,” Lim Guan Eng stated on his Facebook page on July 8.

In a statement published on Sunday, China Press acknowledged their mistake after “re-listening” to the recording of Lim’s speech. They amended a passage, stating that Lim had actually referred to “Hindu temples” and not “Buddhist temples.”
