Sibu will undergo a redevelopment project that aims to transform it into a modern and clean town starting at the end of next year, according to Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Sarawak Premier stated that the estimated cost of the redevelopment, which will run into billions of ringgit, will be funded by both the government and the private sector, as there will be an economic return on investment.

Abang Johari added, “The fund will come from the public and private sector as there will be a lot of construction work to do and a lot of materials needed. Sibu has to become a modern town. If there is too much water, make a big lake and construct canals to manage the water just like in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Singapore that can attract tourism.”

This announcement was made during the “Makam Malam Pemimpin Bersama Komuniti Bahagian Sibu” event held on Sunday night. Abang Johari emphasized that once the redevelopment is completed, the modern and smart town of Sibu will have its own unique character and its positive impacts will extend to nearby areas such as Kapit and Sarikei.

“The development will extend beyond 2035. This means there will be a lot of economic activities in Sibu. But do not expect instant changes as Rome was not built in one day,” he added.

In addition to the redevelopment of Bukit Assek, a 201-hectare area that is no longer suitable for residential purposes due to water-logging and social issues, the Kampung Datu area will also be transformed to change the landscape of Sibu.

Abang Johari expressed the need for cooperation from the Sibu community to make this project happen, as certain quarters may try to use it for political gain. He also mentioned that the state’s income for this year is projected to exceed the RM12 billion recorded last year, indicating positive economic growth.
