PUTRAJAYA: The Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-election results indicated that voters were more concerned about having a stable government rather than the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) received by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke stated this while also highlighting that the collaboration between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional proved to be the winning formula for the unity government’s success in the two by-elections held on Saturday (Sept 9).
“During yesterday’s by-elections, we could clearly see how Barisan and Umno provided their full support to Pakatan candidates, with the machinery being led by Barisan Johor chairman Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin and Johor MB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi,” Loke said.
“Their sincerity in assisting Pakatan candidates was evident, and this was the winning formula. The results demonstrated that voters prioritize political stability as the main factor in voting.”
“Yesterday’s victory can also be viewed as a vote of confidence for the Johor MB and a sign that voters are tired of messy politics,” he added in his speech at the DAP national congress on Sunday (Sept 10).
During a subsequent press conference, Loke mentioned that Perikatan Nasional’s repeated claim of being able to take over the Federal Government in every state election and by-election no longer resonates with voters.
“In fact, it has backfired on them. Voters do not appreciate narratives about yet another change of government because nobody desires instability.”
Following the victories in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections, Loke assured Barisan and Umno that DAP would exert great effort in the upcoming Pelangai polls to secure another victory for the unity government.
“For the next by-election in Pelangai, it will be our turn (DAP and Pakatan) to campaign for the BN-Umno candidate,” Loke stated.
“Coincidentally, Pelangai is within the Bentong parliamentary constituency which is currently held by a DAP MP. We will leverage our resources and influence to win over the voters there.
“Our focus will be on ensuring a victory for BN-Umno as Pelangai is a stronghold for Umno. I have no doubt that they will emerge victorious once again.”
On September 9, Amanah’s Suhaizan Kayat emerged as the winner of the Pulai parliamentary seat with a majority of 18,641 votes, while Nazri Abdul Rahman won the Simpang Jeram constituency by a majority of 3,514 votes.
