Pakatan Harapan has emerged victorious in both the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor, according to the Election Commission.
In the Pulai parliamentary by-election, former Johor state speaker Suhaizan Kayat secured victory with a significant lead of 18,641 votes. The Pakatan Harapan candidate obtained 48,283 votes, while his opponents, Zulkifli Jaafar of Perikatan Nasional, received 29,642 votes, and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi received 528 votes.
Suhaizan was officially declared the winner by the Pulai parliamentary returning officer Miswan Yunus at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim around 10.10pm. This marks the first time Suhaizan has triumphed in an election after six previous attempts in various constituencies.
Prior to this, Nazri Abdul Rahman from Pakatan Harapan secured victory in the Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor. He emerged as the winner with a majority of 3,514 votes, obtaining 13,484 votes in total. Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya from Perikatan Nasional received 10,330 votes, while independent candidate S. Jeganathan won 311 votes.
A total of 60.2% of Simpang Jeram’s voters participated in the election held on Saturday, September 9. It is noteworthy that Pakatan Harapan achieved a larger majority in comparison to the state election last year. On that occasion, the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub won with a majority of 2,399 votes.
