The proposed amendments to citizenship laws have been approved by the Cabinet, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Saifuddin informed the Cabinet about the amendments and will seek to have them included in the House proceedings this year.
He mentioned that the ministry will continue engaging with stakeholders regarding the proposed changes.
Various sessions have been conducted, including with PKR MPs, Perikatan Nasional MPs, party whips, and chairpersons of parliamentary select committees on human rights and women and children.
Next on the agenda is a meeting with the media, distinguished individuals, and civil societies to clarify the details of the amendment, as stated by Saifuddin during a press conference on Friday (March 8).
Under the proposed amendments, evidence of an infant’s birth in Malaysia will be required before their citizenship application can be submitted.
It was previously announced by Saifuddin last month that the Cabinet would deliberate on these proposed amendments on Friday (March 8).
