Charges will be brought against a Cambodian woman and her son at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court in Melaka on Thursday (Dec 7) following the recent viral spread of a video on social media in which the woman allegedly said “Melayu malas” (Malays are lazy).
The 47-year-old woman, who owns a business in Johor Bahru, will be charged under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for uttering the words with the intent to incite a class or community of persons, according to Melaka police.
“Her 22-year-old son will be charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for using network facilities to transmit communication deemed to be offensive,” the police said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 6).
The case was referred to the General Crime and Public Order Unit (UJAKA), Attorney General’s Chambers, on Tuesday (Dec 5), as per the statement.
Prior to this, a video clip of the woman live streaming from a Muslimah clothing store had spread widely on social media platforms.
The woman, a long-time resident of Malaysia, asserted in the video that Cambodians are intelligent and hardworking in comparison to Malays, who she claimed are lazy.
However, she concluded the video by stating that it was meant as a joke and issuing an apology, which was followed by another apology video.- Bernama
