PETALING JAYA: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei (CBCMSB) congratulates Bishop Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis, the newest Malaysian Cardinal (pic).
In a statement released on Monday (July 10), the CBCMSB, together with the Diocese of Penang and the People of God in the region, expresses their profound blessings, happiness, and jubilation over Pope Francis’ appointment of Rt. Rev. Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis as Malaysia’s second Roman Catholic Cardinal.
Bishop Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis was quoted in the statement, expressing his happiness in following the footsteps of the late Cardinals Soter Fernandez (Malaysia), Cornelius Sim (Brunei), and Singaporean Cardinal William Goh.
The statement further emphasizes the joint witness of Cardinal Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis, the late Cardinals, and Cardinal William Goh, along with the Church in Asia, in demonstrating the universality of the Catholic Church and the apostolic continuity of the mission entrusted by the Risen Christ to St. Peter, the Apostles, and their successors. The statement also hopes for the continuation of this mission in Malaysia, Asia, and beyond.
Bishop Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis was announced as one of the 21 new cardinals by Pope Francis on July 9.
