KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Ewon Benedick emphasized the importance of celebrating Malaysia Day at all levels of society to foster greater appreciation for this significant day. He stated that Malaysians of all races, religions, and states should join in commemorating Malaysia Day, just as they do for National Day. Benedick also stressed the importance of teaching the formation of the federation of Malaysia and the significance of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) in schools’ History lessons, in order to properly instill the spirit of Malaysia.
As the president of Upko and Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Benedick believes that these aspects of Malaysia Day deserve more focus and appreciation on a larger scale. He further expressed Upko’s commitment to ensuring the fulfillment of the MA63, as it serves as the foundation of the country’s formation.
Benedick made these statements in conjunction with the 60th Malaysia Day celebration in Kuching, Sarawak. Reflecting on the past 60 years of Malaysia’s formation, he acknowledged the country’s various successes across numerous sectors. However, he also acknowledged the presence of many unresolved issues and challenges, particularly concerning economic and infrastructural development.
Addressing these challenges depends on the unity, mutual respect, and collaborative efforts of Malaysians, according to Benedick. He hopes that all Malaysians will live in unity, harmony, and prosperity, thereby fostering progressive growth for the nation.
