KUALA LUMPUR: Walter Culas, the public face of the Airfreight Forwarders Association of Malaysia (AFAM), has died at the age of 70. Culas had been a part of the airfreight industry for 48 years and served as the head of AFAM for 28 years. He passed away on Friday, November 3, at 5am.

Originally established in 1975 as Persatuan Ejen-Ejen Kargo Udara Malaysia, AFAM’s primary role is to represent the interests of its members and address their concerns to the relevant authorities. AFAM provides a platform for its members to discuss and address issues impacting them and government policies. They aim to approach the government as a unified voice.

According to AFAM’s website, they work with 28 government agencies and bodies, including the Finance Ministry, Royal Malaysian Customs, Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, Transport Ministry, Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry, Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS), Health Ministry, Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), and Malaysian Investment Development Authority.

The list also includes Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, Free Zone Authority, Port Klang Authority, cargo terminal operators like MAB Kargo Sdn Bhd, POS Aviation Sdn Bhd, and Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd, as well as port operators such as Northport, Westports, and Port Klang Free Zone.

Culas was known for his continuous efforts in engaging authorities to drive greater efficiency and transparency in the regulation and management of the airfreight industry. A post on the AFAM website stated, “He led the organization in advocating for facilities on behalf of our members. He has extensive experience and achievements in the industry, but he remains resolute in his dedication and refuses to rest on his laurels.”
