KOTA KINABALU: The public will have a unique opportunity to participate in the naming of three adorable Bornean elephant calves recently born at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. This exciting initiative, known as the “Baby Elephant Naming Campaign,” encourages the public to put forward their suggestions for the elephant’s names. Curator of Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, Maryati Abdullah Lakim, revealed that the naming suggestions can be submitted on the park’s Facebook page starting from July 10 until August 8. Following the conclusion of the campaign on August 9, three winners will be selected from the submissions.
The Baby Elephant Naming Campaign is held in conjunction with World Elephant Day 2023, with the theme “Protecting Elephant Habitats for a Sustainable Tomorrow.” Emphasizing the significance of this campaign, Maryati stated, “The three calves, born towards the end of last year and earlier this year, have not been named yet. Hence, we are inviting the public to contribute their ideas for the elephants’ names.” This initiative not only fosters a sense of participation but also raises public awareness regarding the conservation of Sabah’s wildlife.
The curator expressed her hope that this campaign would help attract more individuals to engage with the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park’s Facebook page, urging them to “like, share, and follow” in order to stay updated with educational activities, conservation efforts, and awareness videos. Maryati emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the value and significance of wildlife in the state and encouraged the public to share the responsibility widely.
Furthermore, Maryati hopes that the Baby Elephant Naming Campaign will also contribute to an increase in park visitors. By involving the public in the naming process, the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park aims to create a connection with its audience and generate more interest in their conservation initiatives. The campaign is proudly sponsored jointly by Borneo Behaviour Solution (BBS), whose manager, Kenneth Maluda, expressed his commitment to supporting the Wildlife Department in implementing successful programs at the park.
