Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, the MP for Hang Tuah Jaya, is taking legal action against Badrul Hisham Shaharin (Chegu Bard) over a Facebook post that he claims is defamatory.

Sankara Nair, who is representing Shamsul, announced that his firm, SN Nair and Partners, has been instructed to take legal action against Chegu Bard for spreading false and baseless statements about Shamsul on Facebook.

“The post has accused our client of being involved in corrupt activities in his role as senior political secretary to the 10th Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“In addition to this, our lawyer has filed a police report against Chegu Bard at the Seberang Jaya police station on Jan 6, for sending a Facebook post that is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement on Friday.

He added that a Notice of Claim has been filed against Chegu Bard and personally delivered to him outside the Setapak police station at around 4.30pm.

“If Chegu Bard does not respond within five days of receiving the Notice of Claim, our lawyer will proceed with filing the Writ of Summons against him.

“Our client has fulfilled his responsibilities with dedication and transparency, but is now being unfairly targeted with these defamatory allegations and is seeking to clear his name,” he said, demanding a retraction of the Facebook post and a public apology.

The legal team has also demanded that Chegu Bard sign a written commitment to not repeat the accusations and comments.

“Failure to comply will result in us seeking an injunction and pursuing legal action, including seeking damages of RM5mil for damaging our client’s reputation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sankara also stated that they have been appointed to represent Muhammad Hafiz Rayyan (a volunteer) and have filed a police report against Chegu Bard for defamatory statements made in an infographic on his Telegram Channel “Chegu Bard Original” with public access.

“Our lawyers have denied the infographic and lodged a police report for investigation under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“Furthermore, we have been instructed to take appropriate legal action in the near future,” he said.
