The Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, has presented several measures to optimize government spending in response to a call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for civil servants to avoid wastage. One of these measures includes utilizing fully-public premises for events and programs. Additionally, Mohd Zuki Ali suggests optimizing electricity and water usage, as well as conducting more online meetings to reduce logistical spending.
He emphasized that official events, meetings, conferences, seminars, and workshops should only be organized when absolutely necessary and preferably held at public premises or Public Training Institutions (ILA). It is also encouraged to optimize the use of utilities such as electricity, water, and office equipment. Furthermore, video conferences and online meetings should be favored to reduce logistics expenses and save time and money on travel claims.
Mohd Zuki Ali also advised civil servants to avoid food and beverage wastage, particularly when it comes to items prepared for meetings and programs. Moreover, he recommended that government workers compare prices before booking flight tickets to ensure value for money. This can be achieved through advance bookings and the use of a Corporate Credit Card.
He also highlighted the importance of compliance for Security Officers when it comes to official travel abroad. They should only attend meetings and conferences that have been approved by the cabinet or are deemed absolutely important with significant impact on national interests, as stipulated in the annual budget. Failure to adhere to the latest financial regulations will result in harsh consequences, warned Mohd Zuki Ali.
During the presentation of the Budget 2024 on October 13, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged civil servants to exercise prudence in spending to prevent the wastage of public financial resources.
