BUTTERWORTH: DAP has stated that they will not allow any changes to the Penang constitution’s two-term limit for the position of chief minister, according to state party chairman Chow Kon Yeow.
He also mentioned that party secretary-general Anthony Loke did not support the idea of amending the state constitution to permit unlimited terms for a chief minister.
“I am not aware of who made this suggestion, but clearly, DAP will not permit it to happen,” he said during the launch of the Pakatan Harapan operations centre for the Prai constituency on July 30.
Chow’s statement was in response to claims that there were efforts to amend the state constitution to allow former chief ministers who had served two terms to be reappointed to the position.
The Penang assembly had previously passed an amendment to the state constitution which restricted a chief minister’s service to two terms.
Addressing the claims about the state executive council line-up being already decided, Chow, who is also the Penang Pakatan chairman, stated that the decision would only be made if they were successful in the upcoming state election.
“Only if we win and I can be sworn in as chief minister, can we then consider the line-up as it would involve all winning parties, not just DAP,” he explained.
