The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) has identified four areas in Kedah at risk of flooding due to high tides that are predicted to occur for three days starting Sunday (Oct 29).

According to iKedah APM director Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Zairil Anuar Zulmuji, the areas at risk are Kuala Kedah, Kota Kuala Muda, Kuala Yan, and Kuala Jerlun along the coast.

Zairil Anuar explained that these high tides, combined with heavy rain, could lead to flooding in low-lying regions, as the wave levels are expected to reach three meters in height.

In light of this, Zairil Anuar advised residents and individuals engaging in recreational activities along the coastal areas to stay cautious of any changes in sea level.

The first high tide occurred at 12:47 am on Sunday, and subsequent high tides are predicted to happen at 1:16 am on Monday and 1:45 am on Tuesday. Boat owners are cautioned about waves taller than three meters that could jeopardize the safety of their vessels.

The Civil Defence Force is fully prepared for any contingencies, closely monitoring the at-risk areas, and ready to take necessary action if public safety is compromised. They have deployed 1,000 personnel as well as boats and land vehicles to assist the public during emergencies.

Zairil Anuar emphasized the importance of being prepared and following safety protocols. If a sudden rise in water level occurs, residents should be ready to move to a safe location or temporary evacuation center. Additionally, caution should be exercised in the presence of children near water, and instructions and warnings from authorities should be heeded.
