KOTA KINABALU: Non-governmental organisation Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) on Wednesday (Aug 16) filed a police report here against Assaffal Alian for spreading a false statement that claimed the Federal Government was handing over the Ambalat Block in the Sulawesi Sea to Indonesia.

In the police report, they urged the authorities including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Attorney General’s Chambers to take legal actions against the Tungku assemblyman under the Defamation Act 1957, the Communications and Multimedia Act, or any relevant laws.

Its chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said Assaffal had made a statement that was misleading during the Sabah state assembly on Aug 10, which had been circulated through a video recording.

Zulkarnain also noted the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin had also reacted to Assaffal’s statement and made clarifications on this matter.

“Even the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a statement earlier in June that the government did not sign any maritime treaty with Indonesia involving the area referred as Ambalat block.

“Therefore the Parti Warisan lawmaker’s (Assaffal) speech at the state assembly last week was irresponsible and could jeopardise the country’s sovereignty,” said Zulkarnain.

He further added that the police report would be forwarded to Sabah state assembly speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim Yahya.
