KUALA LUMPUR: Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has proposed the institutionalisation of a law that ensures equal allocations for government and Opposition MPs. He stated that these allocations are not meant for personal use, but rather to assist constituents in need. “The allocations will be for the people or schools that need to be developed. The money does not come to us. Let’s not punish constituents for their political choices,” he stated during a press conference at Parliament on Monday (Sept 18).

Syed Saddiq also emphasized that the government should treat the Opposition in the same manner they wish to be treated as Opposition MPs. He believes this approach will contribute to building a more mature Malaysia.

Furthermore, the Muda president urged current government MPs to introspect following calls for him to vacate his parliamentary seat. “They were voted in based on their platform of integrity and fighting corruption. If they dare, they should return the mandate to the people,” he challenged.

In March, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his openness to proposals that grant the same funding enjoyed by backbencher MPs to the Opposition. However, Anwar emphasized the need for discussions between the Opposition and the government. He suggested that chief whips and relevant ministers engage in negotiations and make the final decision. “The faster we solve this, the sooner we can approve this, hopefully by tomorrow or the day after,” Anwar stated during Prime Minister Question Time in Parliament on March 7.

It is worth noting that during the tenure of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in 2021, the government provided equal allocations for elected representatives from both blocs under the Prime Minister’s Special Allocation.
