KUCHING: The Communications and Digital Ministry is examining the possibility of implementing a system for social media providers such as TikTok, Google, and Meta to contribute higher financial returns to the Malaysian media industry.
Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that he will continue to research this matter in order to ensure the sustainability and health of the media ecosystem in Malaysia.
“Following a meeting with TikTok, Google, and Meta involving the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the ministry, I have discussed various matters with the MCMC regarding the necessity of registering and licensing these platforms.
“We feel that it is necessary to potentially consider a mechanism for these three platforms to give back to the Malaysian media industry,” he stated on Thursday (Sept 14).
Fahmi mentioned this since the three platforms rely heavily on content created by Malaysian media organizations, yet the returns to local entities are minimal.
“We don’t just want to assist reporters and other individuals who are facing difficulties, but also the media industry as a whole,” he added following his visit to RTM producer Irwan Budi Annuar’s home, who is suffering from kidney and lung complications.
He presented a donation to Irwan from the Tabung Kasih@Hawana fund, which was established to aid media personnel in need of assistance.
“Each case we encounter may be different. Some may have issues beyond health problems.
“Through these visits, I am utilizing the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the problems and we will strive to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution,” Fahmi stated.
In addition to Irwan, the fund also provided assistance to Juary Mesa, a former sports editor at New Sarawak Tribune who suffered a stroke in 2021.
The Hawana 2023 secretariat, who visited Juary at his residence in Kampung Moyan Lidang in Asajaya, handed over the contribution.
