KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) is committed to ensuring that the bill for the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is tabled in Parliament by the March session of next year. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching announced this in a Facebook post on Friday (July 28), stating that the decision was made in a meeting chaired by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil to further discuss the bill.
Teo Nie Ching emphasized that this commitment by KKD is part of their efforts to protect the welfare of media practitioners and authenticate information received by society at all levels. The establishment of the MMC is seen as a way to prevent the spread of fake news and maintain harmony in the country.
“We at KKD welcome Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s directive to enhance and strengthen press freedom as a means to address the dissemination of malicious lies and fake news, which can cause division in society,” Teo Nie Ching said.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself, while announcing the Madani Economy: Empowering the People initiative, reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding and empowering press freedom in order to provide the people with fair and accurate information and news.
