Express bus drivers could soon be required to hold accreditation cards, a move that has been met with approval from the Public Transport Users Association (4PAM) and the general public.

4PAM president Ajit Johl expressed support for the accreditation proposal, but emphasized that bus companies must be responsible for vetting their own drivers, with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) taking on the role of issuing the driver’s cards and conducting random checks.

He stressed the importance of holding express bus companies accountable for ensuring their drivers adhere to safety regulations and laws, rather than leaving all responsibility to APAD.

Ajit also highlighted the need for directors of bus companies to be held responsible if their drivers are found to have violated regulations after receiving their accreditation cards.

The Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association has renewed calls for the government to issue driver’s cards for express bus drivers, citing the need for vetting and verifying details such as outstanding summons or court actions.

Passengers have welcomed the proposal for accreditation cards, expressing the hope that it will lead to a more strict process and help in identifying and removing errant drivers from the roads.

One student, Sabinah Ali, agrees that accreditation cards would provide reassurance for passengers, especially given instances where drivers have displayed irresponsible behavior such as watching videos or talking loudly on the phone while driving.

Zaffran Khairulnizam, a postgraduate student, also supports the proposal and has witnessed instances of bus drivers engaging in unsafe conduct, emphasizing the need for a stricter approval process.
