Police in George Town have apprehended an additional 20 local men to aid in the inquiry of a brawl involving supporters from football clubs Penang FC and Kedah Darul Aman (KDA) FC that took place on Tuesday, August 22.
The district police chief of Timur Laut, ACP Soffian Santong, stated that all the men, aged between 18 and 30 and from Penang, were detained across the state since Wednesday, August 23. “They have been detained for three days starting from Thursday, August 24. Two of them have prior rap sheets related to drug offenses. Initial urine tests conducted on all the suspects yielded negative results for any form of drugs,” Santong said in his statement today.
The incident is currently being investigated under Sections 148 and 427 of the Penal Code, and the police have not ruled out the possibility of making further arrests.
Santong also mentioned that seven men detained yesterday have been released on police bail.
The altercation transpired at a petrol station in George Town at around 11:20 pm on August 22. It is believed to have been instigated by an altercation between supporters from both teams outside City Stadium following their viewing of the Super League match, which Penang FC lost 0-1. – Bernama
